Regis De Trobriand Papers 1869-1871

Régis de Trobriand (1816-1897) was an U.S. Army officer in Montana Territory. This collection consists of English translations of 44 letters written by De Trobriand in French to his daughter and son-in-law while he was stationed at Fort Shaw, Montana, Camp Douglas, Utah, and Fort Steele, Wyoming. These letters were translated by Caroline M. Brammer. She translated only 44 of the 85 letters that are on Microfilm 94. The The letters chosen for translation have some direct relation to Montana. This collection consists of English translations of 44 letters written in French to his daughter and son-in-law (Lina and Kinney Post) while De Trobriand was stationed at Fort Shaw, Montana; Camp Douglas, Utah; and Fort Steele, Wyoming.The typescript translations were done by Caroline M. Brammer of Helena, Montana. She did her work using a microfilm copy of the letters (Montana Historical Society Microfilm 94), but translated only 44 of the 85 letters on the microfilm. The letters chosen for translation contain direct references to Montana.

Trobriand was born at Chateau des Rochettes, near Tours, France, the son of Joseph de Keredern de Trobriand, a baron who had been a general in Napoleon Bonaparte's army, in a family with a long tradition of military service. His mother was Rosine Hachin de Courbeville. In his youth, Trobriand completed a baccalaureate at the College of Saint-Louis in Paris, followed by studying law.
